Firefox & Sunbird Add-On - Minimize to Tray

Ever wanted to minimize Mozilla applications to system-tray rather than taskbar?well, looks like it was all there but I was just not looking.

Here is the extension for Firefox -installs from your add-on console - No problems, works splendid.

The problem really was for the Sunbird (current version) to minimize to tray, looks like the default extension available will only work for Sunbird: 0.2 – 0.3.1 versions. The work around for this is below...

  1. Download the extension for Sunbird here, do not install (right-click and download the file to your PC).
  2. Modify the saved file extension to .rar or .zip
  3. Extract the file contents maintaining the file structure.
  4. Open the extracted folder to edit the file 'install.rdf' with 'notepad'
  5. Inside the 'install.rdf' file replace 0.3 to 0.7 - Save
  6. Compress folder and rename file extension to .xpi
  7. Open Sunbird and install the Add-on

Worked like a charm.Find more Mozilla add-ons here. Also there is this enhancer you may want to try. This version contains some new features. The first in to minimize Firefox/Thunderbird/Sunbird on start. And the second is starting the program with windows. These two together produce a turbo starter.

Hi Edward,

I followed your instructions to get Minimize to Tray to work on my Sunbird 07. I modified the .rdf file as you suggested, I compressed the folder in RAR format with WinRAR and then renamed it to .xpi. Yet when I open Sunbird and try to install the modified extension (point 7 of your instructions), I get the following message:

"Sunbird could not install the file at

file:///C:/Users/pp2/Desktop/minimizetotrayblalala.... .xpi

because: Not a valid install package
-207"

Mmm... what did I do wrong? It would really be useful to keep Sunbird running and minimized in the icon tray, help plz!

Many thanks

Luther

you need to compress it to .zip, and then it works fine

Thanks a lot for this. Seemed to work fine with 0.9.

Luther, it might be that Sunbird doesn't like the rar compression you used. I would using a zip file instead.
