Nokia Cell phone battery recalled!

Nokia Issues Massive Phone Battery Recall

Nokia said Tuesday that about 46 million units of its BL-5C cell phone battery may be at risk of overheating, and is offering to replace them free of charge.

The Finnish phone manufacturer has several companies who produce the battery, and together they have shipped about 300 million units in total. This particular recall would target those produced by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006.

"While the occurrence in the BL-5C batteries produced by Matsushita in the time-period specified is very rare, for consumers wishing to do so, Nokia and Matsushita offer to replace any BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory," Nokia said in a statement.

No other battery models are affected by the recall, Nokia said.

Consumers can determine whether or not Matsushita manufactured their battery during the time period by looking for the battery identification number. Once they have found that number, Nokia asks that they visit a special Web site where they can enter the code to see if it is part of the recall.

If you have a Nokia phone take a look at its battery, because Nokia branded BL-5C batteries are short-circuiting during charging. After over 100 incidents of overheating Nokia has finally decided to recall these batteries. Out of the 300 million BL-5C batteries manufactured, about 46 million batteries are facing this problem. These batteries were manufactured by Japanese company Matsushita between December 2005-November 2006. You can check whether your phone's BL-5C battery needs to be replaced by going to the website: nokia.com/batteryreplacement and punching your 26 digit product identification number or you can call up the local Nokia call centre and give them the number. Nokia in its advisory said "Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the affected batteries could potentially experience over heating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge. While the occurrence in the BL-5C batteries produced by Matsushita in the time-period specified is very rare, for consumers wishing to do so, Nokia and Matsushita offer to replace any BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory." There are about 52 different Nokia models which carry this type of battery many of them popular models in India. With Nokia controlling about 75 per cent of the market, many Indian buyers of Nokia phones may need to get their faulty batteries replaced.
